As we get closer to the beginning of this incredible container, we chatted with one of our speakers, Jose Nunez.
What industry trends are you following these days and why do they interest you?
The future of organizing post pandemic and how community-building continues to evolve year-to-year. An additional trend that I’ve been beginning to track more closely is the role of AI in electoral campaigns — this positive and negative impacts that it can bring depending on its implementation use case(s).
What are you reading these days and what insight have you gained ?
I read a lot of biographies. I’m boring 🙂 but I’ve been trying my best to make my way through ‘A Promised Land’ when I have free time. I’ll have to loop back on my insights once I finish.
What insights have you gained in your time working in digital organizing/your field?
This is a tough question, for me. Reflecting back in my career so far, what I’m most proud of is bringing new and innovative approaches to organizing that was not considered the ‘norm’ in electoral organizing.
What have you seen or achieved that you never thought was possible?
We use a lot of tools in the programs I oversee, but most importantly they all serve a specific purpose. Would love to speak more to how I go about the process of enlisting tools in program. The new tools/strategies that interest me most is the intersection of “relational” and “content.” More specifically how network theory can change how we organize, make decisions on paid programming, and the tools that would make that possible.
Why are you attending Activate? What are you most looking forward to?
I’m attending Activate to build relationships with new people who share similar interested and values. Additionally, if there’s a role where I can help inspire someone to bring new and innovative ideas to the programs they oversee, that would be the dream come true.
What is your WHY?
My core inspiration is my dad. He immigrated to the U.S. when we was 17 and throughout my life I witnessed him work tirelessly to ensure I had the opportunities that allowed me to be where I am today. It took time to realize the core characteristics that have followed me are his work ethic and ability to navigate adversity no matter the situation. The “why” for continuing to do the work I do are the people I have the privilege to develop and cultivate into organizing leaders, who will take the mantle and make bigger and better changes than I could have imagined or thought of.
What is one thing about you that is not on your LinkedIn profile?
I loveeee to cook. More specifically, I ‘smoke’ a lot of meats and seafood. Very ‘Texas’ thing. Can speak for days on that subject.
If you could have dinner with anyone (could be a fictional character or real person, someone who is alive or dead) who would you want to meet and why?
I’d have dinner with Tim Robinson. He’s one of my favorite comedians and I just have to imagine the dinner would be one of the most absurd and hilarious experiences.
