Join Social Scientist Dr. Deepa Narayan for a Transformative Retreat at Hollyhock

Dr. Deepa Narayan is a renowned social scientist, author, and pioneer in global social change. Holding a PhD in psychology and anthropology, she served until 2008 as Senior Advisor in the vice president’s office of the Poverty Reduction Group at the World Bank. Over her career, she has authored or co-authored over 15 books—including the groundbreaking Chup: Breaking the Silence About India’s Women.

Her influential global studies, Voices of the Poor (examining 60,000 people across 60 countries) and Moving Out of Poverty, altered international development by showing how unexamined assumptions and rigid policy mindsets distort human reality. Recognized as one of Foreign Policy Magazine’s 100 Most Influential Global Thinkers and one of India Today’s 35 Great Thinkers, Dr. Narayan’s work focuses on ethical development, reducing inequality, shared sustainable living, and placing people first.

Today, she brings her lifelong focus on dismantling unexamined assumptions to personal growth in her upcoming retreat at Hollyhock: Love & Power.

Designed for women of all life stages, including older women, this gathering creates a dynamic space to examine two core human motivations. Reflecting on her own path, Dr. Narayan shares:

“If I look back at my life, I can now see that it has been a quest for love and power—although I would have been embarrassed to own this; desiring anything felt like a weakness.”

After 30 years of personal and intellectual exploration, Dr. Narayan is inviting women to step into these forces without shame or delay. Her workshop guides participants to “locate their needs for love and power, and learn how to embody power and love before becoming perfect and deserving—or waiting for another ten years, or waiting for just the right circumstances.”

Set among the sacred lands and waters of Cortes Island in British Columbia, this program offers a supportive environment to release blockages and expand comfort with living both power and love. As Dr. Narayan notes, “It actually becomes fun when we explore collectively with other women and in nature.”
