“What you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you’ll discover is yourself.” — Alan Alda
At times you have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. Make a mental list of your favourite books or films. No matter which genre they fall under—superhero, romantic comedy, biopic, stranger comes to town, a quest—the stories that resonate most often boil down to the main character’s journey toward answering the question, Who am I?
These stories appeal to us because we have similar questions about ourselves: What am I doing here? What is my purpose? What do I have to give? What makes me…me?
I recently read the biography of mystic Howard Thurman. Legend has it that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. carried one of Thurman’s books with him to every protest and march he led. One of the many things Thurman wrote beautifully echoes the core idea of SoulCollage®: There is something in every one of you that waits and listens for the sound of the genuine in yourself. It is the only true guide you will ever have. This confirms the idea that our evolution is most authentic when we ask our own questions and listen for the answers that arise from within, rather than looking to external sources. Thurman encouraged meditation and contemplation as valuable elements of our journey to detect that wise inner voice. SoulCollage® offers the chance to do that, as we quietly sift through magazines and allow images to choose us. The rustling of pages, the sounds of tearing and cutting, the feeling of pressing what we’ve assembled onto a firm card—these sensory aspects of the practice provide an embodied experience, leading us to tune in to what we feel, rather than what we think.
The powerful SoulCollage® interpretation practice presents us with the opportunity to use our images to answer the eternal question, Who am I? Armed with this deep knowledge, we’re able to offer our best selves to the world. Although I love visionboarding, SoulCollage® has become my preferred form of intuitive brainstorming, a manner of digging deep to visually represent who I am and offer direction for the path ahead. With imaginative journaling prompts and exercises, I find a wealth of meaning in the images, learning more about all I hold within and my capacity to fulfill my dreams.
Come discover what your own images have to say, in one of the most beautiful places on earth. We’ll create a dozen collages with unique approaches, and we’ll work with our cards in many ways, through reflective writing and group sharing. Our time together will include mindfulness activities—including a lovely watercolour meditation—as well as gentle movement and walks in nature. You’ll also have time for yoga, tai chi classes, and you can even sign up for a sailboat cruise through the calm waters surrounding the island. And you’ll leave refreshed, with the beginnings of your own deck of SoulCollage® cards, a journal filled with your own wisdom, and ways to continue and expand this personal restorative practice at home.
All materials will be provided, and a background in art or writing is not at all necessary. Simply bring your curiosity and an openness to try something new! I’d love to meet you there!
