Exploring Ocean Mysteries: The Science and Poetry of The Salish Sea

With Marjorie Wonham, Ph.D. and Melanie Koenderman

May 31 - June 5, 2024

The ocean has long inspired curiosity and imagination in scientists and poets alike. Join us in a lively, embodied, place-based experience of the beautiful waters and life of the Salish Sea. In this unique program we will explore ocean shorelines and ocean poetry, and create our own poems that deepen our understanding of how we see the sea.

We will be outside daily at or on (or in!) the ocean to hone our capacity to notice and be astonished by the intricacies of marine life. Reading a curated selection of scientifically informed poems by diverse poets, we will open ourselves to this intersection of science and art. We will use a variety of prompts to inspire daily creative expression based on our experiences. Participants will integrate their explorations and impressions to write and share their own poems about the mysteries of marine life.

We welcome scientists, poets, and curious adventurers in lifelong learning to join us in exploring the ocean in this interactive and energizing outdoor program.

Program Highlights

  • Shoreline exploration: tidepooling, hiking, optional swimming
  • Kayaking
  • Reading, writing, and sharing
  • Meditation, mindfulness, and yoga
