Sense Writing: An Ecology of Creative Practice

With Madelyn Kent

June 27 - July 2, 2027

What if you didn’t have to wait for inspiration to connect to your deepest urge to create?

Sense Writing merges somatic principles with the art of writing to help you tap into the rich landscape of your stories, memories, and imagination — whether you already think of yourself as a writer or simply want support to bring your whole self into a creative project.

Developed by Madelyn Kent, Sense Writing teaches students of all levels how to work with the body and nervous system to develop a writing practice full of trust, possibility, and resilience.

In this workshop, you’ll learn to use foundational neuroplastic techniques and time-tested sequences to increase your capacity to regulate your nervous system, access your internal landscape, enhance sensation, and discover creative flow.

We all recognize that feeling of connection when we sit down to write and the words seem to emerge organically. But it can often feel like magic, not something we know how to replicate or create for ourselves. Instead of waiting for the seed of an idea to sprout or fighting with a blank page, in this workshop you’ll discover potent strategies to access the rich terrain of sensation, imagination, and story — and grow your own sustainable creative practice.

About the Presenter

Madelyn Kent

Madelyn Kent is a New York-based playwright, director, teacher and the developer of Sense Writing, a physical approach to creativity. She is a former Creative Writing Faculty member at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and a Practitioner in Feldenkrais Somatic Education. Madelyn believes that the techniques she used to build a sustainable artistic path should be shared, not hidden away, and that a more richly creative world begins by empowering people to find their own way forward.

After teaching playwriting and screenwriting at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, she began to explore more deeply the connections between physical awareness and creative practice. This work eventually led to the development of Sense Writing, which brings together writing, movement, and sensation in a series of guided explorations designed to help people work gently with their nervous systems, unlock their voices and discover new creative possibilities.

In 2008, Madelyn left New York and her teaching position to become a Practitioner in Feldenkrais Somatic Education. Upon returning in 2012, she combined her experience in somatics, teaching and writing to develop Sense Writing. She has since taught the approach to more than 1,000 people in ten countries, from award-winning filmmakers and journalists to people who have never written before. She invites both experienced artists and those who may not think of themselves as artists to join her in a relaxed and supportive exploration of writing and physical awareness.

In addition to receiving an MFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU’s Tisch School of the Art, she studied Medical Anthropology and the History and Philosophy of Science at McGill University, where she studied with plant morphologist and philosopher Rolf Sattler, whose work introduced her to process philosophy and to investigating natural phenomena in a non-reductionist way.
