Inspired by the ocean shorelines, ancient forests, and mountain landscapes of Canada’s west coast, we will explore the magical spontaneity and flow of watercolour by painting directly from nature.
This session is designed for Intermediate to Advanced artists wishing to enhance their perception, technique, composition skills and express their own unique voice and mark making while painting on location outdoors and in the studio.

- Develop confidence applying hydro dynamics watercolour washes.
- Practice of colour and shape reading lessons to capture light, perspective and depth on paper.
- Through step by step demos, learn approaches to painting forests, water, and atmospheric mountains.
- Perception exercises designed to enhance our way of seeing and connection to the natural world and how painting on location can facilitate a way of meditation.
- Travel-friendly painting-on-location tips for creative exploration whether it’s travel journaling or planning a large studio-paintings.
- Practice participating in constructive critiques.

Combined Retreat Option
David McEown is also offering Watercolour and the Art of Seeing (All Levels), June 9 – June 13, 2027.
For those who would like additional time to paint, practice, and absorb the lessons, the two sessions may be taken together as an extended retreat. Participants enrolling in both sessions will also have access to extra painting and mentoring time on the afternoon of June 13 and the morning of June 14, creating a continuous immersive experience between the two workshops.
To register for the combined option, register separately for each program and make a note in the “Special Considerations” section that you’d prefer the same room for the duration of your stay. A 10% discount will be applied on your 2nd program.
