Our presenters are curated for their quality, depth, integrity, and alignment with our educational purpose. Since 1982, a distinguished faculty of authors, educators, activists, artists, performers, and practitioners have shared their work at our Cortes Island campus and in Vancouver.
Erin Burrell, MD, FRCPC (she/her) is a psychiatrist and a Clinical Instructor at UBC. She is an innovator who is passionate about systemic change, and in this journey she has realized that system transformation starts on the inside. Her inquiring has taken her deeply into several psychotherapies, particularly mindfulness and psychoanalysis, where curiosity, awareness and equanimity are cultivated and can be a springboard for skillful action. She is an analyst-in-training with the Western Canadian Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, and an instructor of Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy.
In her community practice, she principally treats health care workers for anxiety, depression and trauma-related conditions. She also trains physicians in psychotherapies (particularly Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Interpersonal Therapy). She co-founded and leads the CBT Skills Groups program, a publicly funded provincial program in BC. Erin emphasizes that everyone, including herself, is a learner when it comes to wellness, and she cultivates group curiosity and support as people discover what is most helpful for them. Erin calls Vancouver home, grateful to live on and be nourished by the lands that are the unceded ancestral territories of the Coast Salish peoples.
